The reception of this book in Cairo in 1904 heralded the end of the Aeon of Osiris and the invocation of the new Aeon of Horus. Thus, the year 1904 EV (Era Vulgaris, or common reckoning of years) is designated as year 0 in the Thelemite calendar.
Three chapters of the Book of the Law were literally dictated to Aleister Crowley in three one-hour “meetings”, from noon to one in the afternoon, on the eighth, ninth and tenth of April 1904 CE. The text of this book is the dictation of a “superhuman intelligence” called Aiwass or Aivaz – a being who displayed knowledge and foresight beyond all human ability.
Crowley later recognized his Holy Guardian Angel in Aivaz, and assumed the mantle of Prophet of the Aeon of Horus as entrusted to him upon receiving the Book of the Law.
